Dror Cohen – Clinical Experience
My name is Dror Cohen. I am a clinical psychologist based in Norwood. I received my Masters degree from Wits in 2008. My master’s thesis focused on Identity and adolescence in a sample of South African youths. I first started working as a counsellor at Lifeline 10 years ago. My experience as a volunteer counsellor included: telephone counselling, trauma debriefing and face to face counselling. In 2005 I began my clinical masters at Wits University. The training focussed on individual therapy and was complemented by 6 month placements at the Centre for Study of Violence and Reconcilliation (CSVR) in Braamfontein and Alexandra Clinic.
During my internship year in 2006 I was placed at the Tara hospital to work in the therapy unit for six months. This is a specialist inpatient unit that focuses on therapy and group work. The second half of my internship was at the Johannesburg General hospital in the adult psychiatric ward. I was a member of a multi disciplinary team with a diverse population of clients. I also ran an out patient clinic at the hospital one day per week.
Throughout the course of 2007 I worked for ICAS an employee wellness company as a consultant. My work focussed on voluntary counselling and testing for HIV within a corporate environment. I also gained part time experience lecturing at Wits to Undergraduate students.
My community service during 2008 was with Government community clinics around Johannesburg. I was placed at 4 different clinics - Eldorado Park, Orange Farm, Westbury and Hillbrow. I ran a weekly out patient clinic at each site for one year. During this year I worked with adults and children that were presenting with a wide range of psychiatric and social challenges.
Currently I am running a private practice in Norwood. I am a registered Clinical psychologist with the Health Professionals Council of South Africa. I am involved in supervision with a senior psychologist and attend professional seminars on a regular basis. One of the things that I appreciate about being a psychologist is that I am always learning.
